DROPDEAD CHAOS

From chaos, a star is born!

That’s what Charlie Chaplin said. And it has never been truer than with the supergroup DropDead Chaos, which was born out of the 2020 lockdown. It just goes to show that Covid had its upsides, too!

Album Underneath The Sound by Dropdead Chaos

This eventful month of March is the perfect opportunity to catch up with our friends at DDC for an interview with Boris, Nils, and Baptiste.

Hello guys, and welcome to our interview! The latest news from DROPDEAD CHAOS includes the release of the track "One Last Encore"—accompanied by a music video—an ongoing tour, and, above all, the release of your debut album, *Underneath The Sound*, on April 7th of this year! First off, congratulations on bringing this long-awaited project to fruition. To kick things off, tell us about this new track: how did you develop the concept, and what were your sources of inspiration while recording these songs?

BORIS : First of all, thank you. I have to admit that launching the DROPDEAD CHAOS project with such a great geographical distance between us seemed like a daunting task, but we are thrilled to have overcome the challenge and to see that fan feedback has been very positive so far. This gives us a real boost for the next stage of the journey. DDC’s music is primarily inspired by the nu-metal wave of the early 2000s, drawing from bands like Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit, among others.

NILS : To talk about our beginnings: DDC initially formed as a collective aimed at supporting healthcare workers at the start of the COVID crisis. We hadn’t actually met in person back then; we worked via video calls, email, and so on. It wasn’t until the release of our third single that we decided to become a proper band. So, these are songs we’ve been working on for over a year—maybe even two. I’ll let the singers tell you about the lyrics; musically, I’d say there’s a strong 2000s Nu Metal foundation, but we each added our own personal touch to create something uniquely ours—something that, while tapping into the nostalgia of those 2000s influences, still feels quite modern.

And in your opinion, what is the distinctive sound of this "young" band? 🙂

BORIS : Our primary goal in composing this album was to create music that resonates with us and that we love listening to, while also trying to add a signature sound—distinctively DDC—to the French metal landscape.

NILS : I think DDC’s strength lies in all those very diverse influences and the fact that we have an outside perspective from our producer, who is also deeply involved in the songwriting. We manage to come up with something effective that works for everyone—and by that, I mean everyone in the band.

Tell us about the making of—and the message behind—your highly successful debut music video, "One Last Encore."

BAPTISTE : We were fortunate enough to shoot with Brice Hincker and Amélie Diane from CHS PROD; we know Brice well, and it was important for us to work with him. The music video symbolizes the determination to overcome depression and proves that it is always possible to triumph over adversity. Together with HK—with whom I co-wrote the script—we also wanted to leave viewers free to form their own interpretations. We drew inspiration from the works of David Lynch, who always managed to steer the audience away from the actual meaning of his storylines; the realization only comes at the very end. It was important for us to include that kind of plot twist while also presenting a narrative that respects the lyrics by Renato and Déhà.

And so, in April—a pivotal moment in a band's life—comes the release of your debut album, *Underneath The Sound*!

BORIS : Yes, you’re absolutely right; it’s a very important date and event in the life of a band. It represents three years of hard work that will finally come to fruition on April 7, 2023, and we really hope the audience enjoys the album as much as we enjoyed composing and recording it.

NILS : Absolutely! Plus, there are going to be quite a few surprises surrounding the release of this album! We can't wait!

Tell us about the lyrical content of the band's songs, the themes they explore, and how you approached the songwriting process.

RENATO : We are two singers, and we write the lyrics together. We are fortunate to be completely in sync regarding our approach to the content and writing style for DDC. Unlike other projects where we might invent and tell stories, that isn’t the case here: the themes stem directly from our actual experiences, situations, and emotions at the very moment of writing. Throughout the album, you’ll find themes like depression and loneliness, but also the joy and pleasure our respective situations genuinely bring us. In short, we open our hearts completely, never misleading the listener about our psychological and emotional states—something that is a first for me personally. This allows each listener to interpret the lyrics in their own unique way.

In which studio did you set up your instruments?

BORIS : We are fortunate to have our producer, HK from VAMACARA STUDIO, who has been an integral part of the project from the start and also takes on the role of the band's manager.

NILS : We recorded at Vamacara Studio with HK, who has been with us since the early days of DDC. We’d be lost without him, haha!

What is your approach to live performances? What can fans expect from your concerts?

BORIS : Live performance is where DROPDEAD CHAOS truly comes into its own; we want to craft our concerts as genuine "spectacles" that leave no one indifferent. It is a significant challenge, but it is what we want to offer the people who come to see us on stage.

NILS : We don’t just want to play a concert; what we’re aiming for is an absolutely killer show! When you see DDC, it hits you hard because we put so much work into the stage production. We go through back-to-back residencies with our tech crew to get the lighting and sound as perfect as possible (big thanks to them and to all the venues that support us)! Plus, we’re constantly talking and sharing ideas to turn a DDC gig into a genuine live experience!

In the near or distant future, what would the ideal version of DROPDEAD CHAOS look like?

BORIS : In an ideal world, what would make us happy is establishing DROPDEAD CHAOS as a significant band on the French metal scene and inspiring the young people who see us perform to embark on their own musical projects later on.

NILS : A band whose name will be written in big letters on festival posters—haha! More seriously, we hope to go as far as possible and tour extensively, both in France and internationally!
